The list of names lined up for this year’s biggest ever “Nyah County Cavan Arts Festival 2008”, to give it the full name, reads like a who’s who of Irish music’s cream of the crop. Over 300 artists from 18 countries will descend on the Breffni county throughout March to take part in a packed programme of events across the county, ranging from major concerts to intimate pub sessions, with a host of extras including music and song workshops, awards presentations and book and CD launches. The big difference this year is that the Nyah spreads across the county, with towns like Virginia, Ballyjamesduff, Belturbet, Cootehill and Bailieboro all having a share of the action, as well as Cavan town itself. The word “nyah” refers to the very expression of the tradition … to its lift or “soul”. This is a festival of all things Cavan. Now in the Fifth year, the Nyah festival celebrates the traditional music, song, dance and culture of County Cavan, the Ulster tradition and the county’s very own musical style. This is a festival of all things Cavan. Now in the Fifth year, the NYAH festival celebrates the traditional music, song, dance and culture of County Cavan, the Ulster tradition and the county’s very own musical style.
While the Nyah programme promotes events throughout the county on a year-round basis, almost all the action in the flagship March 5th —30th period takes place in towns & villages throughout Co Cavan. Cootehill, Belturbet, Cavan, Arva Virginia, Milltown, Kilnaleck , Blacklion , Bailieborough and Ballyjamesduff.
The Nyah Festival will feature no end of extra trad sessions and "fringe events". Acts and events will include , Cran ,Brian Mac Namara, a day long Traditional Singers' Session, and open air concerts, lectures, music and song workshops. The Nyah Sessions have previously attracted the top names in Irish music in the country and the best musicians from the tradition will be spinning down Breffni roads again to play at several of the sessions during the year.
St Patrick’s weekend will have Farnham Arms Hotel Cavan ,Widows Bar ,Belturbet and Don Smiths Cootehill hosting concerts and Sessions.
Adding some international flavour to the feast will be the return of Will O , a five-piece outfit all the way from Tuscany in Italy who have come up with their own unique blend of Irish music with a Mediterranean touch.

Brian Mullen is a native of Derry City and has been singing traditional songs for more than 30 years. Like many others in the 60s ,he fell under the spell of Bob Dylan and the American folk revival and made his way from there back to his Irish roots. He met, became friends with and learned from some of the great singers of Ulster, like Eddie Butcher, Joe Holmes, Geordie Hanna and Nellie Ni Dhomhnaill. Mullen has been involved in broadcasting since 1984 and has worked for many years with the BBC where he was Northern Ireland's first full-time Irish language radio producer. He helped to set up Radio Ulster's Irish Language Unit in 1987 and currently presents the weekly radio program, "Caschlar," which features an eclectic selection of music from around the world.
